Product Description

Product Description

'A glorious panorama of medieval times ... The historical research is impeccable' Sunday Express The year 1464 finds our hero Nicholas in Venice. Plagued by enemies bent on dissolving his assets and smearing his character, he sets sail for Africa, legendary location of the Fountain of Youth and the source of gold in such abundance that men prefer to barter in shells. He will discover the charms of the beautiful Gelis - a woman whose passion for Nicholas is rivalled only by her desire to punish him for his role in her sister's death. Erotic and lush with detail, SCALES OF GOLD embraces the complexity of the Renaissance, where mercantile adventure couples with more personal quests behind the silkeb curtains of the Age of Discovery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely riveting, 6 Aug 2001
By Hamstead (Midlands UK) - See all my reviews

Unlike the previous reviewer, I feel that Scales of Gold puts Dorothy Dunnet right back on track. My own struggle was with book 3 of this series - Race of Scorpions which more than once I was tempted to give up. In contrast I devoured Scales of Gold with the same hunger as Niccolo Rising and The Spring of the Ram. And how refreshing to have a Medieval that is set outside of Europe and England in particular. I commend both Dorothy Dunnet's research and imagination as prodigious.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top notch historical novel, 16 Oct 2007

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I found "Scales of Gold" as good as the three previous novels in the series. By all means you should read them in sequence, you'll appreciate all the more the development of the characters, and knowing what came before makes each novel all the more readily understandable, and richer.

This one takes Niccolo far beyond the boundaries of Europe (which is a nice change from the many historical novels set in Europe) and Dunnett weaves her plot as cunningly as Niccolo his merchant ploys. She paints a superb picture of medieval times and peoples it with fascinating characters.

It's a demanding book for sure, as they all are, and I kept ample notes while reading. At just over 700 pages, and peopled with dozens of characters that's on the one hand a necessity (unless you have a prodiguous memory, which I don't), but on the other hand that makes it all the more fascinating and rewarding. The book's well worth the effort, and I'm sure it still becomes better on a second reading (which I haven't undertaken yet).

4.0 out of 5 stars Not my favourite DD but still a superb book, 11 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Frankly this is my least favourite DD. As Nicholas's adventures progress through the sequence the books become increasingly obscure, conversations and motivations in particular. I feel that in this one DD has outsmarted herself. It became so convoluted that I lost the plot and found myself quite unable to understand the motivation of several characters. It was brilliantly written, evocative and full of adventure, seat edge stuff, but for me, flawed.
